Short answer

Start with strong screenshots. Add an app preview when motion, timing, or interaction is essential to understanding the app and you can maintain localized video. Previews precede screenshots when provided.

Use a preview when motion carries the proof

  • A gesture or animation is the product’s main differentiator.
  • The interaction is difficult to explain truthfully in one still image.
  • You can capture only the app experience and meet Apple’s preview rules.
  • You have time to maintain poster frames, device sizes, and localizations.

Stay with screenshots when clarity matters more than motion

  • The app’s value can be understood from three ordered product moments.
  • A solo launch needs a smaller, easier-to-update asset set.
  • The UI contains text or state that needs longer viewing time.
  • Localization budget does not yet cover narrated or edited video.

Make the decision with one test

Mute the draft preview and pause it on the proposed poster frame. If the product becomes unclear, the video may be doing useful work. If the same story is clearer in three still images, ship the maintained screenshot set first and test video later.
